Blue Dream plant potted in a decorative ceramic pot

Forgiving · 9–10 weeks

Every gathering has one person who gets along with everybody — the aunts, the teenagers, the neighbor nobody invited. Blue Dream is that person, and California made it famous for exactly that reason. Born somewhere in the Santa Cruz fog out of Blueberry and Haze, it spent two decades as the best-selling strain in the state, which is a little like being the most popular song in a state that only writes hit songs. As a plant, it is embarrassingly agreeable. It grows fast, forgives your learning curve, stretches toward whatever light you give it, and produces like it is trying to impress your parents. The smell is blueberry over sweet haze; the character is bright, easy company — awake, chatty, nothing heavy-handed. Wants: room to stretch and a decent amount of sun. Forgives: nearly everything, including you.

OG Kush plant potted in a decorative ceramic pot

OG Kush

$22.00

A fair middle-ground grow · 8–9 weeks

Some plants have a résumé. OG Kush has a discography. It arrived in Los Angeles in the nineties, promptly rearranged the entire West Coast family tree, and has been name-checked in more songs than most record labels. Half the strains on this page are its grandchildren and the other half are pretending not to be. It smells like the inside of a cedar chest parked at a gas station — pine, earth, fuel, lemon — and it does not apologize for any of it. The character is the classic evening exhale: shoulders down, edges off, opinions optional. As a plant it wants a bit of attention — it prefers steady indoor conditions and rewards people who actually read the card we send. Wants: consistency and a grower with mild standards. Forgives: less than Blue Dream, more than your last houseplant.

Sour Diesel plant potted in a decorative ceramic pot

Rewards experience · 10–11 weeks

Sour Diesel is loud in every sense the word has. The smell walks into the room before the plant does — fuel, citrus, something faintly illegal-feeling even where it is perfectly legal — and the effect is the same energy translated: bright, chatty, ideas arriving three at a time and none of them waiting their turn. Fair warning, told with love: this is a project plant. It grows tall like it is trying to see over the fence, takes its sweet time finishing, and will absolutely inform your neighbors of its existence. In exchange it hands experienced growers one of the great harvests in the catalog. If this is your first plant, take a teen and a deep breath, or start with something in the Forgiving column. Wants: real sun, real height, real patience. Forgives: honestly, not much — that's the deal.

Granddaddy Purple plant potted in a decorative ceramic pot

Forgiving · 8 weeks

Granddaddy Purple was introduced in the Bay Area in 2003 and immediately became the strain your most relaxed friend will not stop recommending. At maturity it turns colors that look photoshopped — deep violets under orange hairs — and it smells like grape candy that studied jazz. The character is gravity, administered kindly. This is an after-dark plant: limbs get warm, the couch improves, the phone loses its urgency, and eventually the pillow wins the argument. As a grow it is a gift to beginners — compact, sturdy, quick to finish, happy in a tent or a big pot by a bright window. One honest note: the famous purple arrives at flower, with cool nights. Your teen will be green and ordinary-looking. So were all of us at that age. Wants: a calm corner and cool evenings late in the season. Forgives: new growers, missed Tuesdays.

GSC plant potted in a decorative ceramic pot

GSC

$24.00

A fair middle-ground grow · 9 weeks

GSC came out of San Francisco's Cookie Fam in the early 2010s and did to cannabis what a certain shoe did to sneakers: created a lineage, a price point, and a line around the block. Half the dessert strains you have ever heard of trace back here. The profile is baked goods with a background of pepper and earth — sweet on the way in, warm on the way out. The character suits a good dinner: sociable, unhurried, everything slightly funnier than it strictly deserves. It is stronger than its name sounds, so pace yourself like an adult. As a plant it is medium effort, medium height, and stingier than its famous relatives — the yield is modest and the quality is the entire point. Aficionado math. Wants: a grower who trims their plants and their expectations about volume. Forgives: most beginner mistakes, not neglect.

Gelato plant potted in a decorative ceramic pot

Gelato

$52.00

Rewards experience · 8–9 weeks

Gelato is what happened when the Cookie Fam kept going. It is the strain sommeliers pretend not to have favorites about, and then order. Sweet cream, citrus, berries, a finish that made "dessert strain" a genre — and at maturity, colors that get photographed more than most people. The character is silk with a spine: deeply relaxing without unplugging you, sociable without volume. Evening company at its best-dressed. Growing it is the catch, and we would rather tell you now: Gelato is particular. It wants dialed conditions, steady temperatures, and a grower who enjoys checking on things. This is why we sell it as a teen only — we handle the diva years, you get the payoff. Consider it the catalog's final exam, arriving with the hard part done. Wants: precision and mild flattery. Forgives: professionals.

Zkittlez plant potted in a decorative ceramic pot

Zkittlez

$20.00

Forgiving · 8 weeks

Zkittlez comes from Northern California and smells like the candy aisle achieved consciousness. Grape, berry, citrus peel — sweet enough that first-time visitors to the greenhouse always ask what it is, and always smile when they hear the name. Here is its quiet superpower: it relaxes without flattening. Where heavier strains escort you to the couch and take your keys, Zkittlez just turns the day's volume down and leaves you functional — a rare trick, and the reason it wins awards while remaining a genuinely reasonable evening choice. The plant is compact, cheerful, and low-drama: quick to finish, happy indoors or out, smell present but polite. If Granddaddy Purple is a weighted blanket, Zkittlez is a good cardigan. Wants: very little, honestly. Forgives: beginners, renters, people with plans tomorrow.

Jack Herer plant potted in a decorative ceramic pot

A fair middle-ground grow · 9–10 weeks

Named for the activist who wrote the book on hemp — literally, it's called The Emperor Wears No Clothes — Jack Herer is the thinking person's morning plant and has been since the nineties. Dutch-bred, California-beloved, and the answer aficionados give when asked what "clear-headed" is supposed to mean. It smells like a walk you were glad you took: pine, black pepper, something green and resinous underneath. The character is lucid forward motion — focus with the anxiety filed off, the strain equivalent of a tidy desk. People finish things on Jack. Sometimes the things even needed finishing. The grow is agreeable middle ground: medium height, medium schedule, content in a bright window or a sunny bed, with a slight stretch that responds beautifully to a little training. Wants: morning light and a to-do list. Forgives: most things except being kept in the dark.

Harlequin plant potted in a decorative ceramic pot

Harlequin

$18.00

Forgiving · 8 weeks

Harlequin is the strain for everyone who has ever said "the strong stuff sends me sideways" and meant it. It is CBD-forward — typically several parts CBD to one part THC — which in practice means the edges soften while the head stays entirely yours. No spiral, no couch, no rehearsing conversations from 2014. California's wellness crowd made it famous, but its best audience is beginners and the sensitive: the character is a calm, present, gently loosened afternoon. It pairs with errands. It pairs with your in-laws. As a plant it is sturdy, quick, quiet-smelling, and happy nearly anywhere bright — one of the easiest grows in this catalog, which feels thematically correct for the least intimidating thing we sell. Wants: sun and not much else. Forgives: everyone, on principle.

Wedding Cake plant potted in a decorative ceramic pot

A fair middle-ground grow · 9 weeks

Wedding Cake is GSC's more decadent cousin — vanilla frosting over black pepper, rich enough that the name required no marketing meeting. It arrived out of Southern California's dessert dynasty and promptly started winning things. The character is a proper evening: deeply settling, warm, indulgent, the day formally concluded. It is one of the stronger profiles we carry, so the correct serving size is "less than you think," a sentence that has never once been heeded. Growers love it for the ratio of effort to reward — a manageable medium plant that produces like a big one, frosted so heavily at maturity it looks dusted with sugar. It is loud in the smell department, so this is an indoor-or-understanding-neighbors situation. Wants: an evening person with a carbon filter or acreage. Forgives: a fair amount, remembers everything.

Northern Lights plant potted in a decorative ceramic pot

Forgiving · 7–8 weeks

Northern Lights is the strain your grandfather's hippie brother grew, and it is still here because it has never once been bad at its job. A foundational indica from the eighties — one of the plants modern cannabis is literally built on — it survived four decades of flashier competition by being reliable in a way flashy never is. The job in question: sleep, and the calm on the way there. Earthy, faintly sweet, resinous, and quiet — this is the most discreet plant in the catalog, low-odor enough for thin walls and close quarters. For growers it is the classic first plant: compact, fast, resilient, nearly impossible to insult. If you have killed a cactus and confessed it in our finder, this is very likely who the finder introduced you to. Wants: a corner and a lamp. Forgives: everything. It has seen decades of us.

Durban Poison plant potted in a decorative ceramic pot

A fair middle-ground grow · 8–9 weeks (early for a sativa)

Durban Poison is a pure landrace sativa from South Africa's port city, carried west decades ago and adopted by California like a citizen. Nothing was crossed into it. What you grow is what farmers around Durban were growing generations back — sweet anise and spice, and an effect like a double espresso that skips the jitters and goes straight to intent. It is the catalog's espresso: morning clarity, projects begun, drawers finally organized, a suspicious amount of enthusiasm about all of it. Outdoors is where it becomes itself — tall, fast-growing, famously resistant to weather and mold, built by generations of actual sunlight. Give it a real bed and real sky and it will give you a genuinely impressive plant, and a conversation piece over every fence it clears. Wants: full sun and a horizon. Forgives: weather, pests, and ambition.
